I built a "field" ballast for the generator in my 1963 Ford Galaxie so I can control the constant overcharging problem I had with that car. When I took out the bench seat and put in bucket seats I had this nice big space between the seats. So I built a console with my CB, scanner, stereo and alarm system in it, I also had a voltmeter in the console that I could monitor and if the battery started to overcharge, I just flipped the switch to put the ballast in the circuit. The "ballast" was 2 20 watt resistors in paralell for a total of 10 ohms as I recall.(going from memory) The relay and the resistors was under the hood and it was controlled by a switch on the console.
